Panthers, Black Sox Score Upsets in SPL Playoff Openers
North Carroll and Biglerville both scored opening round upsets in SPL playoff action Thursday night.
North Carroll used a 3-run top of the first to take an early lead that they would never relinquish in their 6-4 win over Hanover at Diller Field. Elijah Wingate drove in three runs, including two with an RBI single in the first, and Ryan Gerber and Connor Risner were both 2-for-4 for the Panthers. Steve Stonesifer went 5 1/3 innings and Zac Nedzel finished up to preserve the win. Clint Roche, Bob Taylor, and Zack Rudisill each had two hits for Hanover, with Rudisill banging a home run.
Biglerville topped Littlestown 6-3 under the lights at Littlestown Thursday. Seldom seen Tyrel Taughinbaugh provided an offensive spark for the Black Sox with a 2-run home run in the third inning. Brendan Delridge earned the win.
New Oxford scored six runs in the final three frames to pull away from Gettysburg 7-0 at New Oxford High School. Matt Martin had three hits to lead the Twins, and Anthony Lippy struck out 11 in the complete game effort.
Cashtown put a dozen runs on the board in the first and crusied to a 14-0, five-inning win over Brusthown. DJ Cool pounded three hits and was joined by teammate Chase King with 3 RBIs. Zach Ketterman and Michael Tempel added two hits each.
Game two of each respective series is slated for Saturday at 1:00 at the home of the lower seeded teams.
