Smith Stellar in Pirates Debut
Cody Smith made his debut with his new team a good one as he tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in Cashtown's 1-0 win over Biglerville Thursday night at the Cashtown Yards. The Pirates were actually outhit 2-1 in the contest, but Smith, who pitched for Brushtown for many years before his move west, struck out nine against no walks to notch the win. The Pirates scored their lone run in the sixth when Cooper Ayres, another Brushtown transfer, walked, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on Robert Rohrbaugh's sac fly. Tanner Byers tossed five strong innings for Biglerville, which got singles by Shawn Redding and Jesse Beal.
In other South Penn action from Thursday, New Oxford doubled up host Gettysburg 10-5 behind a 13-hit attack led by Zach Keffer, who went 4-for-4 at the dish and drove in three runs. Larry Baumgardner, Mitch Collins, and Alex Emlet each had a pair of hits and two RBIs. For Gettysburg, Jarrod Mattias was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Logan Carbaugh has two hits.
Hanover mashed Littlestown 11-0 at Diller Field in the opener for both teams. No other game details were reported.
