The Cashtown Pirates completed one of the most dominant seasons in SPL history, winning their third straight championship after an 8-3 victory over Hanover on Sunday at Cashtown Yards. Cashtown finishes with an overall 33-4 record, including an 8-1 playoff record. Hanover took early leads in each of the first two innings on Sunday, but the Pirates tied the game in the bottom of each frame. It wasn't until the fourth that Cashtown finally took its first lead of the game, and a 3-run sixth broke open what had been a close game. J.C. Collins' pair of hits included a home run and 4 RBIs, while Zach Ketterman had three hits and Chris Schachle and Cooper Ayers added two hits among Cashtown's 13-hit attack. Pat Brady continued a torrid post-season with three of Hanover's five hits, and Bob Taylor drove in two runs for the Raiders.
Cashtown moved to within one game of securing their third straight SPL crown after a 18-5 win Saturday at Diller Field. The visitors trailed 3-0 after an inning but quickly put 8 runs on the board over the next two innings. The Pirates blew things open with 10 runs over the fifth and sixth innings that included home runs by Robert Rohrbaugh and Michael Tempel. Zach Ketterman, Ethan Ketterman, and Tempel had two hits each for Cashtown, which scored their 18 runs on just 11 hits but took advantage of 10 free passes during the game. Cody Smith tossed all six innings for the win. Pat Brady and Clint Roche had three hits each for Hanover, with home runs from Roche and Mark Phillips accounting for all of Hanover's tallies.
Cashtown cranked out 15 hits and scored 8 runs over the final two innings of its 9-2 win over Hanover in the opening game of the SPL championship series Thursday at Cashtown. The offensive surge came late, however, as the Pirates trailed 2-1 following Austin Kibler's double off the fence in the top of the fifth. The Pirates answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits from D.J. Cool, Ethan Ketterman, and Chris Schachle. The Pirates blew things open with a five-run sixth that included Cool's squeeze bunt, a two-run error, and run-scoring hits from Ketterman and Robert Rohrbaugh. Chase King went the distance for the Pirates for the win. Ketterman had three hits to lead Cashtown's offense, while Cool, Schachle, Rohrbaugh, and Michael Tempel added two hits. Kenny Horney had two of Hanover's seven hits.
Cashtown and Hanover will square off for the SPL championship for the third straight year after each team closed out its semifinal series with victories on Sunday.
Cashtown survived a spirited Biglerville comeback attempt and hung on to down the Black Sox 6-5 at Oakside on Sunday. The Pirates led 6-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, but Pat Armor's 2-run homer in the sixth and Travis Byers' 3-run jack in the bottom of the seventh cut the lead to one. The Black Sox put the tying run on base but Zach Ketterman, the fourth Pirates pitcher of the game, came in to notch the final two outs for the save. Alex DeHaas tossed five plus to get the win. Michael Tempel had three hits, Ethan Ketterman two, and J.C. Collins drove in a pair for Cashtown. Byers and Armor each had three hits and Brandon Miller and Kyle Gillingham two each for Biglerville.
In a tightly contested game at Diller Field, New Oxford led 4-2 heading into the fifth but a three-run Hanover rally, highllighted by Pat Brady's 2-run double, put the Raiders ahead to stay in their 6-4 win. Joel Clabaugh, Jeff Deveney, and Kevin McManama had run-scoring hits to give the Twins their early cushion, but the Raiders cut into the Twins lead via RBI hits by Jon Karlheim and Clint Roche. Brady, Roche, Karlheim, Austin Kibler, and Mark Phillips each had two hits for the Raiders, while McManama and Mitch Collins had two hits each for the Twins. Andrew Burke got the win despite allowing all four Twins runs, and Brady tossed two shutout innings for the save.
Biglerville's Tyrel Taughinbaugh singled home the only run of the game in the top of the eighth and saved his team from elimination in the process in the Black Sox's 1-0 win over Cashtown Saturday at Cashtown. Pirates hurler Cody Smith allowed just two hits through regulation before Chase Long hit second double of the game with one down in the eighth. Taughinbaugh followed with a single to right that chased Long home. Biglerville's Ben Bretzman hung on from there, completing an eight-inning shutout in which he allowed just two hits and stuck out six. Hunter Rang doubled for the Pirates.
Hanover blanked homestanding New Oxford 6-0 thanks to Tyler Null, who surrendered just four hits in a complete game effort. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Bob Taylor and Rick Estes sandwiched walks around a Mark Phillips singled, the first of the game, all with two outs. Adam Smith walked to force in a run, and Kenny Horney dropped a pop up single over the mound to make it 2-0. That score held until the seventh when the Raiders strung together five hits, including Taylor's RBI single and Estes' run-scoring double. Phillips added a sac fly and Clint Roche scored on a wild pitch. Phillips, Roche, and Estes had two hits each for the victors.
