News and Updates

North Carroll and Biglerville both scored opening round upsets in SPL playoff action Thursday night.

North Carroll used a 3-run top of the first to take an early lead that they would never relinquish in their 6-4 win over Hanover at Diller Field. Elijah Wingate drove in three runs, including two with an RBI single in the first, and Ryan Gerber and Connor Risner were both 2-for-4 for the Panthers. Steve Stonesifer went 5 1/3 innings and Zac Nedzel finished up to preserve the win. Clint Roche, Bob Taylor, and Zack Rudisill each had two hits for Hanover, with Rudisill banging a home run.

Biglerville topped Littlestown 6-3 under the lights at Littlestown Thursday. Seldom seen Tyrel Taughinbaugh provided an offensive spark for the Black Sox with a 2-run home run in the third inning. Brendan Delridge earned the win.

New Oxford scored six runs in the final three frames to pull away from Gettysburg 7-0 at New Oxford High School.  Matt Martin had three hits to lead the Twins, and Anthony Lippy struck out 11 in the complete game effort.

Cashtown put a dozen runs on the board in the first and crusied to a 14-0, five-inning win over Brusthown. DJ Cool pounded three hits and was joined by teammate Chase King with 3 RBIs. Zach Ketterman and Michael Tempel added two hits each.

Game two of each respective series is slated for Saturday at 1:00 at the home of the lower seeded teams.

Littlestown and Biglerville have mutually agreed to move the start time of their opening round SPL playoff game this Thursday, July 25, to 7:00 p.m.

All other series openers on Thursday will begin at the customary 6:00 p.m. start time.

Pairings for the first round of the SPL  playoffs were determined on Saturday. They are as follows:

Top overall seed Cashtown (25-3) will square off against no. 8 seed Brushtown (0-27).

No. 2 seeded New Oxford (20-6-2) will host no. 7 seed  Gettysburg (8-18-1).

No. 3 seed Hanover (18-9-1) will face no. 6 seed North Carroll (10-17).

No. 4 seed Littlestown (17-10) will play no. 5 seed Biglerville (10-18).

The first game of the SPL playoffs is scheduled for this Thursday, July 25, at the higher seed's field. Game two will be played on Saturday, July 27, at the lower seed's field. Game three, if needed, will be Sunday, July 28, at the higher seed's field. Weeknight games are scheduled for 6:00 and weekend games at 1:00.

In one of two weekend games wtih playoff implications, Biglerville trailed Gettysburg 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth before exploding for eight runs, leading to an eventual 13-3 win over the Grays Saturday afternoon at Oakside. Tanner Byers was 4-for-4 and Noah Ayers drove in 3 to lead the Black Sox offense. Jamie Beal tossed five innings, striking out six along the way, to grab the win. Ian Van Anden had two runs batted in for Gettysburg, whose loss locked the Grays into the seven seed for the upcoming SPL playoffs.

Littlestown defeated North Carroll 9-6 in 10 sweltering innings in Hampstead. The Dodgers scored two in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6, then pushed across three runs in the top of the 10th to win it. Andrew Wilmer and Ryan Gerber both had three hits for North Carroll in a losing cause. Jacob Crawmer drove in two for the Dodgers.

Cashtown and New Oxford were tied up at 2-2 entering the sixth before the Pirates pounded out seven runs over the final two frames in their 9-2 win over the Twins at New Oxford High School. DJ Cool was 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs and Chase King drove home three for the first-place Pirates. Michael Tempel went five innings for the win. Brady Topper had a pair of hits for the Twins.

Biglerville's win, combined with North Carroll's loss, meant that Sunday's remaining matchup between North Carroll and Gettysburg would determine the 5-6 seeds in the SPL playoffs.  However, after playing 10 innings on Saturday following a doubleheader Friday night in high temperatures, North Carroll (with Gettysburg's agreement) has opted to not play their remaining makeup game.  That leaves North Carroll and Biglerville with identical 10-18 records, and Biglerville - having won three of four against the Panthers in the regular season - wins the tiebreaker.  That hands Biglerville the no. 5 seed and relegates North Carroll to the no. 6 seed.

Littlestown and Brushtown have also agree to scrap their remaining regular season contest that was rained out on Wednesday, since it has no bearing on playoff seeding.

North Carroll and Gettysburg split a doubleheader under the Friday night lights of Rec Park, with North Carroll winning game one 10-4 before the Grays came back to take game two 13-3. In the opener, Todd Wilmer had just one hit but drove in five runs. Zak Nedzel had a pair of hits and scored three times. Gettysburg managed just four hits, but their pitchers combined to strike out 14 Panthers in the loss.  The Grays rebounded to take the nightcap thanks to a strong performance at the plate by Dustin O'Brien, who was 4-for-5 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Troy Litten added three RBIs and scored three times. Derrick Ivey allowed just one hit and struck out 12 in the six inning contest.

North Carroll, Gettysburg, and Biglerville could each finish anywhere among the 5 thru 7 seeds in next week's playoffs, with Gettysburg and Biglerville facing off today and the Grays and Panthers set to square off again on Sunday.
