The 2019 South Penn League season is slated to kick of today, April 28, with a pair of games. The entire South Penn League schedule will be posted here very shortly (some offseason technical issues prevented the loading of the schedule but we think that has been resolved). Check back on this website for updated scores, standings, statistics, and news.
The 2018 South Penn League Individual Award Winners were announced Monday after a vote of the league managers in attendence at the year end meeting.
Mark Phillips of the Hanover Raiders was named 2018 SPL Most Valuable Player. Phillips batted .377 and led the league in home runs (8) and runs batted in (28). He also ranked among the top 10 hitters in hits, runs scored, walks, and slugging percentage. Cashtown's Robert Rohrbaugh and Biglerville's Travis Byers finished tied for second in the vote.
After winning a share of the award a year ago, Hanover pitcher Andrew Burke was named the league's Most Outstanding Pitcher in 2018. Burke finished with a 4-1 regular season record, with a 1.35 ERA and 39 strikeouts. Cashtown's Chase King finished second in the voting, with New Oxford teammates Anthony Lippy and Alex Emlet tying for third.
The Most Oustanding Young Player award went to Michael Tempel of Cashtown. Tempel led the league in hits (38), stolen bases (15), and total bases (54), and finished in the top 10 in multiple other categories. His .463 batting average was third best in the league. Littlestown's Trent Copenhaver finished second in the balloting and New Oxford's Brady Topper was third.
The league sportsmanship award went to the Cashtown Pirates.
The Cashtown Pirates scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a deadlock and held on to defeat the Hanover Raiders 4-2 Thursday night at Cashtown to win the 2018 South Penn League Championship. Playing in front of a huge crowd, the two teams traded leads throughout in a tension-filled game that lived up to its hype. Cashtown grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Zach Ketterman singled and raced home from first on a hit-and-run single by D.J. Cool. The Raiders tied it up in the top of the second when Kody Kibler blooped a single to score Hanover starter Andrew Burke. The game remained deadlocked for the next two innings as respective aces Burke and Chase King grinded out of several jams. In the fifth inning Hanover took its only lead of the game when Alex Smith reached on an error, advanced to second on a bunt, and scored on Mark Phillips' two-out, full count single to left. The Pirates came right back, however, knotting the game at 2-2 on Chris Schachle's Texas-leaguer that scored Ketterman. King escaped another jam in the top of the sixth without damage before leading off the bottom of the frame with a solid single. King moved to second on a passed ball, and Ethan Ketterman followed with a bunt that failed to advance King to third, but was well placed for an infield single. J.C. Collins' sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position with one-out, prompting group huddles by both teams. Cashtown lead-off man Michael Tempel worked the count to 2-1 before dropping a suicide squeeze sac bunt down the first base line that scored King with the go-ahead run. Zach Ketterman then belted his fourth hit of the night, a double, to drive in brother Ethan. King took the mound in the top of the seventh and hit Smith with a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs. Robert Rohrbaugh relieved King at that point and retired all three batters he faced in order to preserve the victory and hand Cashtown its second consecutive league championship.
With their backs against the proverbial wall, Cashtown remained cool. Starting pitcher D.J. Cool tossed a complete game two-hitter and helped his cause by driving in four runs as the defending champs staved off elimination with a 5-1 win Tuesday night at Diller Field. Hanover will now visit Cashtown Thursday night for a winner-take-all game five of the SPL championship. It is the first time the SPL championship series has gone to a deciding fifth game since 2008.
Cool got things started for the Pirates offense by drilling a two-run home run in the top of the first, and Chase King chased home another run with a single. Cool singled home another run in the fifth and brought in the Pirates' final tally on a bases loaded groundout in the seventh. Hanover was held hitless through five frames but broke up the no-hitter and the shutout when the Brothers Phillips hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth, with Mark driving in A.J. Michael Tempel led Cashtown's 11-hit attack with three singles out of the lead-off spot.
Game five on Thursday begins at 6:00.
The Hanover Raiders brought the lumber on Sunday, cracking 14 hits and taking advantage of 8 free passes to defeat homestanding Cashtown 11-6. The win give the Raiders a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-five SPL championship series. Kody Kibler, Alex Smith, and Kenny Horney each drove in three runs for the Raiders, with Smith and Mark Phillips pacing the offense with three hits each. Kibler and Clint Roche each added a pair of hits. Beau Deatrick tossed five innings to get the win. He struck out three and allowed just one run before being removed with an 11-1 lead in the sixth. The Pirates scored 5 runs over the final two frames to halve the gap but they could get no closer. Tyler Reinert and Chris Schachle each had two hits for Cashtown.
Game four moves back to Diller Field on Tuesday at 6:00.
