News and Updates
Littlestown defeated Biglerville 10-0 Friday in game one of their SPL playoff quarterfinal. Justin Keith allowed just three hits to register the win for the Dodgers, who got three hits from Trent Copenhaver and doubles from Brian Laurito, Tanner Kohler, and Joe Murren.
Hanover and Brushtown were once again unable to play their opener due to wet grounds. They will try again on Saturday at 1:00 at Diller Field.
New Oxford pitcher Anthony Lippy allowed no hits over six innings and the Twins scored nine runs in the final two innings to defeat North Carroll 10-0 Thursday in game one of their best-of-three playoff series. Brady Topper drove in five runs for the Twins, who got multiple hit games from Dan Shafer, Davey Zaminski, Larry Baumgarnder, and Topper.
In the other playoff opener to take place Thursday, Cashtown defeated Gettysburg 12-2 in five innings. Pirates ace Chase King struck out eight to earn the win while helping himself at the plate with three hits and three runs scored. Miichael Tempel and Zach Ketterman added two base knocks, with Tempel adding a home run. Dan Dennison homered and scored twice for the Grays.
The other two games scheduled for Thursday (Brushtown at Hanover; Biglerville at Littlestown) were postponed due to wet grounds. Both games are slated to be played Friday, weather and field permitting.
The Littlestown vs. Biglerville and Hanover vs. Brushtown games scheduled for Thursday have been postponed due to wet grounds and will be played Friday.
The New Oxford vs. North Carroll and Cashtown vs. Gettysburg games are both ON for Thursday.
With heavy rains impacting the final week of the regular season and many teams unable or electing not to play postponed games, the final standings for playoff seeding purposes have been finalized.
First round playoff matchups will be as follows:
New Oxford (1) vs. North Carroll (8)
Cashtown (2) vs. Gettysburg (7)
Littlestown (3) vs. Biglerville (6)
Hanover (4) vs. Brushtown (5)
The top seeded teams are scheduled to host the lower seeded teams on Thursday, July 26. Wet fields and further rain may complicate matters, obviously. Per SPL guidelines, any postponed games shall be played the very next day. Keep checking this website or with team representatives to confirm game dates and venues until the weather is more cooperative!
The decision by several teams not to re-play previously rained out games has cleared up the South Penn League standings....a little.
Littestown and Hanover, which were rained out Saturday in their original regular season finales, each elected not to replay the game. Per league guidelines, any games where both teams agree not to play shall be scored as "losses" for each team for playoff seeding purposes. The current league standings reflect this. The "loss" by Littlestown means that Cashtown will be the no. 2 seed in the upcoming playoffs, and Littlestown will be the no. 3 seed.
Brushtown and North Carroll, also victim to Saturday's rain, have also elected not to replay that game. With both Brushtown and Hanover taking an extra "loss", the Raiders currently stand a half-game ahead of the Bulldogs in the standings. Brushtown is scheduled to play Gettysburg Tuesday, and Hanover is slated to play North Carroll on Tuesday, weather permitting. A win by Brushtown and a Hanover loss would give the Bulldogs the number 4 seed and home field advantage in round one of the playoffs, while a Hanover win and Brushtown loss would secure the no 4 seed for the Raiders. Complicating matters is that Brushtown and Littlestown have one remaining game left to play, which could potentially be played Wednesday evening. No details on the status of that game have yet to be reported to the league commissioner.
Gettysburg and North Carroll both sit with identical 3-24 records, with one game left to play (Tuesday) for each. Because the Grays took three out of four regular season games against the Panthers, Gettysburg will earn the no. 7 seed should both teams win, lose, or not get their final regular season games in. North Carroll will be the no 8 seed unless they are able to manage a win in their final scheduled game.
The South Penn League playoffs' opening round begins Thursday evening at the home fields of the top four seeds.
