Cashtown defeated Biglerville 7-2 Sunday in the final game of both teams' regular seasons. The Pirates finish the year at 19-9 and are currently in second place in the standings. A pair of wins by Littlestown in their final two unplayed games (vs. Hanover and Brushtown, which have yet to be scheduled) would give Littlestown the number 2 seed. Otherwise, Cashtown gets the 2 seed and Littlestown settles for the 3 seed.
Biglerville finishes with a 12-16 record and will visit either Cashtown or Littlestown Thursday as the no. 6 seed.
Hanover downed North Carroll 13-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday. Game two fell victim to rain. With the win, Hanover inches up to fourth in the standings, half a game ahead of Brushtown. The Raiders will play Brushtown in the first round of the playoffs, but home field advantage remains a mystery. The Bulldogs just need to finish even with Hanover to earn the 4 seed and home field advantage in round one. Brushtown has a makeup scheduled with Gettysburg on Tuesday as well as games against Littlestown and North Carroll that have yet to be scheduled. Hanover has two unplayed games (against North Carroll and Littlestown).
North Carroll must win one of its two remaining unplayed games to earn the no. 7 seed. Otherwise, the Panthers will be the no. 8 seed and travel to top seeded New Oxford in round one of the playoffs.
All four South Penn League games scheduled for Saturday fell victim to the rain. With Saturday's slate originally expected to wrap up the regular season and more rain in the forecast, some creativity may be needed to get the final games in.
Cashtown and Biglerville will give it a try Sunday at 1:00 at Cashtown. Hanover and North Carroll will attempt to play an already rescheduled doubleheader Sunday at North Carroll.
New Oxford and Gettysburg, with the Twins already having secured the top seed and Gettysburg having difficulty finding an acceptable makeup date in the next two days, have elected to forgo re-playing their game that was rained out today. Both teams will take a "loss" in the standings for playoff seeding purposes.
No makeup dates for the Brushtown-North Carroll or Hanover-Littlestown games rained out on Saturday have been provided. In addition, Littlestown and Brushtown have one regular season game left to play that has not been rescheduled.
Cashtown defeated Gettysburg 10-0, and Littlestown defeated Brushtown 10-4 Thursday night in a pair of SPL makeup games. The wins mean that Cashtown and Littlestown will be the number 2 and 3 seeds in the upcoming SPL playoffs, with the exact order to be determined this weekend. The Dodgers control their own fate, as a pair of wins in their final two games (or a win and a Cashtown loss) will give the Dodgers the number 2 seed.
Biglerville defeated North Carroll 7-6 Thursday in another makeup game, with Travis Byers delivering a 2-run walkoff single for the victorious Black Sox. Biglerville is locked in as the six seed and will take on either Cashtown or Littlestown in round one of the playoffs. North Carroll and Gettysburg will be the number 7 and 8 seeds, with the order not yet decided.
Hanover and Brushtown will be the number 4 and 5 seeds and will play each other in the SPL playoffs opening round. Both teams have identical records with 3 games left to play, the results of which will determine who gets the number 4 seed and home field advantage.
Littlestown defeated Brushtown 6-0 Tuesday at Memorial Field. The two teams will square off two more times in the final week of the season, with both games at Brushtown.
In other SPL action from Tuesday night, Cashtown broke away late to down New Oxford 8-5 at Cashtown Yards.
The Gettysburg Grays brought an end to a long losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader from North Carroll Sunday afternoon at Rec Park. Tyler Martin pitched a complete game in the Grays' 7-1 win in game one. In the nightcap, Mike Topper and Mike Elicker each homered during Gettysburg's 10-7 win. The two teams are tied in the win column with a week to go in the SPL regular season.
New Oxford and Hanover played 20 innings and mustered only 4 runs between them in a pair of pitching duels both won by the Twins on Sunday. Dan Shafer pushed in the only run of game one in the bottom of the 13th, making a winner of himself in the Twins 1-0 victory. Scott Meckley's walk-off single lifted the Twins to a 2-1 win in game two. Brady Topper homered to tie the game in the sixth.
Brushtown and Cashtown split their doubleheader Sunday in Brushtown. The Bulldogs pounded the Pirates in the opener 14-1 before Cashtown rallied for a 4-1 win in game two.
Littlestown swept Biglerville at Oakside by scores of 8-5 and 15-0. Littlestown moved into a tie for second place with its second doubleheader sweep in three days. Biglerville is now locked in as the no. 6 seed for the upcoming SPL playoffs.
